Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra is believed to
be the oldest sex manual in existence. Generally considered the standard
work on love in Sanskrit literature, the book is thought to have been
written around 300 A.D, or the "Classical Age" of India.
The book is best known to Westerners as an instruction manual for
acrobatic sex because most translations use only a portion of one
of the 35 chapters, the famous index of sexual positions.
In Sir Richard Burton's classic translation of 1883, other chapters
have more innocuous headings such as: Of Creating Confidence In The
Girl, On The Arts And Sciences To Be Studied, The Life Of A Citizen
and About The Business Of A Go-Between. |
