Lodge employees found Vladimir Mamontov's body in the lodge, where he was able to crawl despite his wounds. The bear had injured him on the head, broken his arm, and repeatedly clawed him. Two bears are kept at the lodge for dog training; one of these bears apparently attacked Mamontov when he approached to feed it. The society had recently celebrated its 115th anniversary and awarded Mamontov the title of Russia's Distinguished Huntsman.
